stranger things 2 bob

WARNING: Spoilers for ‘Stranger Things 2’ below!

Sean Astin’s Bob was a standout character in the second season of Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things‘ but according to the show’s producer, Shawn Levy, he almost never had his superhero moment. This isn’t the first major change from concept to what ended up on the screen but it might have been the most memorable from what we’ve read so far.

When asked if there had been a plan to kill off one of the major characters introduced, Levy revealed that Bob was originally meant to be killed off pretty early on:

“That was never on the table. We had talked about the death of some major characters, that may or may not happen in the future near or far. But that was never part of the discussion for Season 2. The death of Bob was initially much earlier. In fact, in an early outline, Evil Will kill him in like Episode 3.”

Apparently it would have happened in the car scene where Bob is giving Will the pep talk on how to defeat Pennywise the Shadow Monster and “Will just straight-up murders Bob in that car.” Without the hero arc for Bob or the reveal that Will was evil so early the entire second half of the season would have played out quite differently.

Thankfully, it was his performance right off the bat that caused some major rewrites as:

“We wanted to keep him alive longer, and then use his death as Joyce’s engine. The avenging of that would become Joyce’s engine for the finale.”

While we’ll all miss Bob, I’m pretty sure they were able to push forward quite a bit more drama going this route and it worked for the best.

Are you sad that we won’t have more of Bob in the third season of ‘Stranger Things’ and beyond or was this the way he should have gone out? Share your thoughts below!
