ABC and Marvel Television’s experiment ‘Inhumans’ is by most accounts a failure. The first two episodes failed to entice many audience members to IMAX theaters in advance of the series’ television debut. And once the show arrived on TV, critics and viewers seemed to hate it. But through it all, ‘Inhumans’ garnered okay ratings. It wasn’t a hit by any means but also wasn’t a complete bomb, although it is highly unlikely that it will return for another season.
Its finale got a .5 Nielsen rating which equates to 1.95 million watchers. It managed to retain 100% of the numbers of its lead-in ‘Once Upon A Time’ (another show on its last legs). But it seems that ‘Inhumans’ has taken down an unexpected victim– news show ’20/20′.
’20/20′ followed ‘Inhumans’ on ABC’s Friday night schedule, but while the Marvel show aired, the ratings of the news stalwart dropped to among the lowest in its entire history. In ratings, it was down 64% in the 18-49 demographic from the same period last year and 58% in total viewers. As a result, NBC’s similar ‘Dateline’ saw its numbers more than double those of ’20/20′. But overall, your grandma’s favorite network, CBS came out on top with hits like ‘Blue Bloods’, ‘Hawaii 5-0’ and the increasingly popular ‘MacGyver’.
Is this the last we’ll see of Anson Mount, Serinda Swan, Iwan Rheon and the rest of the Royal Family? Probably. ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has always been the black sheep of the Marvel family, with the movies and even the Netflix shows completely ignoring its existence. And ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is likely entering its final season. However, there is evidence that the Inhumans will pop up on that series. If not, then they’re most likely gone for good.
The same can most likely be said for showrunner Scott Buck. Besides ‘Inhumans’, Buck was also the showrunner of Netflix’s ‘Iron Fist’ which isn’t just considered the weakest of Netflix’s Marvel shows, but just a terrible show overall. Marvel will no doubt cut all ties with Buck moving forward.
