We’ve long known that they weren’t planning on wrapping up the ‘Divergent’ series with a fourth film but instead with a television series, and now details are coming out about it! For starters, it will be titled ‘Ascendant‘ and has been picked up by Starz. There has been a lot of drama dealing with this change as cast and crew were all expecting the fourth movie and hadn’t signed on for this change of direction from Lionsgate. While ‘Divergent’ and ‘Insurgent’ did well at the box office, ‘Allegiant’ bombed for both critics and sales. Instead of pushing the fourth one through they changed directions and now we’re getting this.
We’re not quite sure what kind of changes this will mean for completing the story of Veronica Roth’s novels or if this will be a standalone series. Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort have all been hesitant on committing to TV to wrap up this tale. What we do know though is that Adam Cozad will be penning the series and be a Co-Executive Producer along with director Lee Toland Krieger. These two were initially set to tackle the cinematic bookend to the series so at least creatively we’ll have the same vision that had originally been planned.
I can’t imagine this will fare well with previous fans if the casting is changed but if you’re trying to lure in new ones a reboot might be their preferred route. Either way, this is a scenario that won’t make everyone happy.
Are you annoyed that this cinematic franchise is now moving to the small screen? Do you think that they’ll be giving closure to the tale with the same actors or will this be some strange form of a reboot to tell just the end of the story? Share your thoughts below!
