We previously heard that ‘The Dark Tower‘ television series would be an origin story of Roland Deschain and Idris Elba would be narrating it. Now we’re hearing a bit more on how that is coming together. While the franchise on the whole will likely depend on how well the movie does when it is released next month, we know that a connective origin story television series has always been in the works.
Recently, co-writer and producer Akiva Goldsman has confirmed that not only has the script for the television series begun, but that Elba is involved:
“The first episode of a show has been written, and we hope to retain Ron Howard’s original idea to mix platforms, something that seemed revolutionary 10 years ago but now is something that others have done. Idris for sure is part of this, and if the movie is Roland Deschain the gunslinger, the show is his origin story, based on the fourth novel in the series, Wizard and Glass.”
From what it had originally sounded like, we were going to have Roland traveling with Tom Taylor’s Jake Chambers and telling him his life’s story. The television series would be flashbacks to a younger actor playing a young Roland who was still learning to be a Gunslinger. While this doesn’t clarify that the idea is still what they’re running with, it seems likely that it is the route which they’ll be following.
I’m just worried that due to a lack of advertising that ‘The Dark Tower’ won’t have the numbers at the box office to sustain a second movie let alone an ongoing television series.
Are you glad to hear that a television series connecting the potential films to the past is still in development? How has the movie been shaping up for you so far in previews? Share your thoughts below!
