While we’ve known much of the casting news for ‘Fantastic Beasts 2,‘ Warner Brothers has now officially confirmed the lineup. While doing so, they have also given new details about the film! Much of the plot will sound familiar for those who have been following the rumors and early developments of the movie, but we can now confirm that the general theme will have Newt Scamander teaming up with Albus Dumbledore against Gellert Grindelwald!
Johnny Depp is in as Grindelwald, and the events of the film take place months after ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’ Playing Dumbledore is Jude Law with Eddie Redmayne reprising his role as Scamander. After Grindelwald escaped, he hasn’t been idle and has been busy “gathering more followers to his cause — elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol) and Jacob (Dan Fogler), but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”
Also returning is Ezra Miller as Credence “whose fate was unknown at the end of the first film” and in this sequel, he “makes a mysterious return.” Zoë Kravitz showed up in the first film in a photo and has been confirmed to play Leta Lestrange. Callum Turner (‘Green Room’) will be joining the cast as Newt’s brother Theseus who is a “war hero and Auror” and Claudia Kim (‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’) joins the cast “as a featured attraction at a wizarding circus” though not much about her role is known at this point.
With the action being featured in London and Paris instead of New York “There are also some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of the books and film series.” I suspect we’ll be seeing more than just Easter Eggs popping up if they are making a point to mention that but could just as easily be a scene done at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
