Even with ‘The Walking Dead’ having lower ratings it is clear that the zombie menace is everywhere and now The Disney Channel is getting in on it with a new musical original movie titled ‘Zombies.’ Yes, The Disney Channel for our children is going to have a show about intelligent zombies with a “zombie-centric high school musical.” ‘Zombies’ plans on following zombie students who are being transferred to a primarily human high school and the trials and tribulations that go along with it.

Yes, we’re getting social commentary on the differences in people being portrayed by the undead. While I can’t imagine how this is going to play out to audiences, it is a fun little throwback to George A. Romero’s work as all of the “of the Dead” movies were using zombies for social commentary.

That being said, the stars will be a human cheerleader and a zombified football star who fall in love. Their goal is to move past the prejudices against one another and unite the townsfolk to be more open and understanding. As a musical, I’m sure there will be a ton of singing, dancing, and more. At this time Meg Donnelly (‘American Housewife’) and Milo Manheim (‘Ghost Whisperer’) are set to star in the roles as Addison and Zed.

As more intelligent zombies have been used in films such as ‘Warm Bodies‘ as well as shows such as ‘iZombie,’ the once terrifying creatures have been regulated to the role of vampires as no longer being scary. Since it is doubtful that this show will be full of gore of the undead being flesh eating monsters, it will likely be quite family friendly.

I can appreciate the use of the undead to work against bigotry though wonder if these creatures will ever truly be able to be scary once more.

While an exact release date isn’t set yet, we know that ‘Zombies’ is scheduled to be unearthed in 2018.
