hellboy

We only heard about ‘Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen‘ yesterday, and already a small tidbit of information on the tone of the movie has surfaced. While we’re all a bit bummed that Guillermo Del Toro won’t be able to finish his trilogy with Ron Perlman, I just can’t help but be excited about the creative team that is putting this together. Director Neil Marshall does a fantastic job with horror and bringing in practical effects so seeing him lead David Harbour (‘Stranger Things’) as Big Red should be a real treat.

News about the tone comes directly from Andrew Cosby who is co-writing the film with Christopher Golden and series creator Mike Mignola:

“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy. Neil said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.”

Many of Mignola’s works stray into the realm of Lovecraftian Horror with cosmic horror having humanity being next to nothing to it. However, he still manages them to be full of heart, and I’m hoping we’ll see the script go this route. For where they are in production Cosby continued:

“Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen. The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.”

With Hollywood’s usual pace for films, this is either one of the fastest projects to have come together so far or was well into the development stages when Del Toro was pitching ‘Hellboy III: Dark Worlds’ earlier this year.

Are you excited for a “darker” and “more gruesome” take on Hellboy than what we’ve seen on the big screen so far? Do you think that this film will kick off a franchise that we’ll be getting multiple installments to? Share your thoughts below!
