While we’ve heard rumors of soft reboots of the ‘Men in Black‘ franchise, it seems like director Barry Sonnenfeld (‘A Series of Unfortunate Events‘,’Wild Wild West’) would love to do a fourth entree into the franchise but only on one condition – the studio delivers something new. He isn’t a fan at all of the crossover with the ’21 Jump Street’ franchise that still seems to be happening and doesn’t believe that most of the original talent would be involved but feels there is plenty of room to give us an ongoing series that isn’t a reboot but takes place in the same world that we’ve seen K and J in so far.
Honestly, this is a franchise that could do a soft reboot as there are plenty of other agents and stories which we could likely enjoy watching on screen. The problem is with how long they’ve waited to continue it, it seems like a bit of a waste at this point.
According to Sonnenfeld:
“I wish there were a fourth film. I don’t think Will Smith nor I would be involved. But I love the franchise because I developed it and created it.
But I think the problem with making a fourth film – for a while they were talking about combining 21 Jump Street and Men in Black – [is] there are too many expensive players in the mix.
There’s [Steven] Spielberg, there’s other producers, and I think the way to do it is to have new agents or something like that.
Not have me, not have Will, not have Tommy [Lee Jones]. Just have other adventures. I wish they would do it; I don’t know if they will.”
If this was done right with Smith and Jones back in the roles, it could be a fun watch, but I do think that they’d work better as cameos while introducing us to new agents. Not that either would likely sign up to do that.
Would you be game for a new installment of ‘Men in Black’ with new agents or do you feel that either the franchise is done or would only be enjoyable with a return of Smith and Jones? Share your thoughts below!
