“I hope [audiences] enjoy [my new movie Happy Birthday].  I know I did!  It made me want to do more movies for sure, I would do anything to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 – are you listening James Gunn?”

So spoke Aerosmith lead singer/’American Idol’ judge Steven Tyler last week while promoting his indie horror film ‘Happy Birthday’.  Tyler has had dozens of acting gigs, but usually plays himself.  ‘Happy Birthday’ marks his first time playing a character that isn’t Steven Tyler in over a decade.

But the fact that Tyler knows James Gunn by name as the director of the ‘GotG’ flicks proves he’s a true fan and not just someone who wants to jump on the Marvel Train for the money.  (I mean… what does Steven Tyler need more money for?)

Music plays a HUGE role in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies.  The first film was peppered with light rock classics from the 60s-70s and the compilation soundtrack hit number one in the US and was certified platinum after selling over a million copies.  Director James Gunn has confirmed that he will not deviate from this format for the sequel, meaning expect another ‘Awesome Mix Tape’ to accompany it.

In addition, Jimmy Urine of the punk band Mindless Self Indulgence has a role in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2’ and following the death of David Bowie (whose ‘Moonage Daydream’ appeared in the first film), Gunn revealed that he had hoped to court the legendary singer/actor to appear in ‘Vol. 2’.

So what about the legend that is Steven Tyler?

Gunn WAS listening and had this to say:

“Yes, I did hear that Steven Tyler wants to be in Guardians of the Galaxy. He gave Guardians of the Galaxy a shout-out the other day in an interview. He said, ‘James Gunn are you listening?’ The answer is: Steven, yes I am listening. And I’m a big fan of Steven Tyler‘s. I had the pleasure of directing his daughter Liv in a movie [Super in 2010] in which she was fantastic, and I met him for a few seconds at a screening of that movie. He’s a cool guy. And of course I would love to work with Steven Tyler sometime.

“If I did Vol. 3, sure. I love [Steven Tyler]. Love his work & he’s a very warm guy.”

The problem is in that last section, “IF I did Vol. 3.”  Gunn has already stated that he was unsure if he wanted to make another ‘GotG’.  Plus the second hasn’t opened yet and while hopes are high, let’s keep in mind that many fans of ‘The Avengers’ were disappointed by ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, resulting in a lower grossing sequel.  We already know we’re getting two more ‘Avengers’ movies since those have been the works for years.  But it appears that with some of the smaller brands like ‘Guardians’ and ‘Ant-Man’ they’re playing it by ear and not planning sequels until they see how the announced movies perform.

As for Steven Tyler in ‘Vol. 3’?  Well, he already looks like he’s from another planet.

What do you think?  Do you want to see the Aerosmith front man in a third ‘GotG’?  Do you even want to see a third if James Gunn isn’t directing?

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ directed by James Gunn, and starring Chris Pratt, Zoë Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Benicio del Toro, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, and the voices of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper takes off on May 5, 2017.
