Darth Vader is back! As has long been rumored/hoped, the Sith Lord will appear in this December’s ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ which takes place shortly before Episode Four, the first ‘Star Wars’ movie, ‘A New Hope’. It was in ‘A New Hope’ that the world was first introduced to one of the great villains of cinema, Darth Vader who went on to darken the second two films, while the prequels focused on his evolution from altruistic Padawan to the wheezing tyrant we all love to hate.
‘Rogue One’ follows a group of Rebels led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) who are tasked with stealing the plans to the Deathstar, the key to their victory in ‘A New Hope’.
‘Entertainment Weekly’ writer Anthony Breznican confirmed Vader’s appearance, stating:
“Darth Vader kind of looms large over the plot even when he’s not necessarily on screen because the new villain played by Ben Mendleson, Director Krennic, [is] trying to fulfill the wishes of the Emperor and he’s got kinda Vader looming in the background over his shoulder, making sure that he gets the job done.”
Make of that what you will. As we know, Director Krennic fails, since the Rebels do get away with the blueprints, as we saw in ‘A New Hope’. And, uh… well, Krennic’s not in ‘A New Hope’ or any other ‘Star Wars’ movie.
David Prowse embodied Darth Vader in the original trilogy, while Gene Bryant stood in for ‘Revenge of the Sith’. James Earl Jones has provided his voice in each of these movies.
The new issue of ‘Entertainment Weekly’ arrives on Friday and the cover is devoted to ‘Rogue One’, so expect loads of fresh information about this film that has so far been shrouded in secrecy.
What burning questions do you have about ‘Rogue One’?
