Shortly after Marvel Studios released a new synopsis for ‘Doctor Strange’ earlier today, they shared one for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ as well. In addition confirming reports that we’ve been hearing about the upcoming sequel to the surprise hit of 2014, there are also a few interesting surprises contained in the latest description for director James Gunn’s latest tale from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This synopsis teases that some former foes and “fan-favorite characters from the classic comics” will come to the Guardians’ aid as they try to discover some important details about Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord. You can check out the whole thing below:
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2’ continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
As brief as it is, this blurb does bring up a number of things. First, it’s interesting to note that Peter Quill is the only member of the team mentioned by name. With the spotlight on him, will Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket take a backseat to their swashbuckling teammate? Then, you can’t help but wonder which old foes will become allies in this film. With Karen Gillan set to return as Nebula, could she be mending fences with her sister and traveling with the crew of the Milano sometime soon? Or is this referring to one of the teammates former enemies that we didn’t have a chance to meet in the first movie?
Surely these are really important questions that we all want answers to sooner rather than later, but the biggest thing that stands out in this synopsis is the bit about characters from the comics. The PR team was careful to mention that we’ll be seeing some familiar faces from the CLASSIC comics. This is particularly interesting because a fan theory that has recently emerged on Reddit has hypothesized that Kurt Russell, Sharon Stone, and Sylvester Stallone will be playing members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy team from back in the day, which Michael Rooker’s Yondu was also a part of. Stone’s comments about her character having heat powers could point to her playing Nikki Gold, who was genetically engineered to survive the harsh conditions of Mercury. Though nothing is known about Stallone’s character, he generally fits the description of Charlie-27, a soldier from Jupiter with eleven times the muscle mass of a normal human being. And as for Russell, there’s a possibility that he could play Stakar Ogord AKA Starhawk, the son of rumored villain Kismet (who might be the mystery character that Elizabeth Debicki is playing) and possible father of Star-Lord. If that’s the case, then GOTG2 has just become a much bigger family affair than initially anticipated. Of course, this is all speculation and guess right now, so be sure to take all of this speculation with a grain of salt.
