SPOILER ALERT: This article discusses the ending of Season Six and the upcoming Season Seven of ‘The Walking Dead’, which may be considered SPOILERS, so proceed with caution.
Fans were pissed about the Season Six finale of ‘The Walking Dead’, entitled “The Last Day On Earth.” The show has never shied away from teasing viewers with cliffhangers, but many felt that the ending of the episode crossed the line when it came to unanswered questions.
Executive producer Greg Nicotero insists this ending played out as the show’s creators planned and will be instrumental when Season Seven premiers in the fall.
“It propels our people. It affects our people profoundly, as it does in the comic book. That changes everyone’s direction.”
Of course, just because Nicotero mentions the comic book doesn’t mean that things will play out the same on the show. The show very often alters the comic events to keep readers on their toes and to prevent spoilers. But needless to say that however the infamous cliffhanger is resolved, it will greatly impact the surviving members of the cast.
One major impact will be on lead character Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) whose hubris this past season has come around to bite him on the ass hard!
“The main thing about Season 7 is establishing that the world isn’t what everybody thinks it is, the world out there. At the end of Season 6, Rick was so confident. ‘We’re just going to knock out that outpost, we’re going to f–k these guys up before they f–k us up,’ and it ends with him going, ‘Heh, oh well, I had no idea. What I perceived as the world is not even close to what the reality of the world is,’ and Negan’s there to show him that.”
For one thing, as hinted by Jesus (Tom Payne), the world just got a lot bigger. As hinted at in “The Last Day On Earth,” it appears that viewers of the show are about to discover another settlement, The Kingdom. Nicotero states that Rick and the gang will pack up and leave Alexandria, at least partially due to the shocking climax of that episode.
“Season 7 of The Walking Dead, there’s all new worlds that we’re going to meet, so it wouldn’t have made sense to end a chapter and then start it halfway through the next chapter. You want to end in one place and pick it up.”
Ratings actually dipped for this hit series during Season Six. It appears some have gotten too frustrated with the twists, turns and teases.
