YE BE WARNED: This post contains SPOILERS for ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ so proceed reading at your own risk!
For those of us who have seen the film one, three, or seven times already (not telling you which category I fall into… but it’s one of the latter two), we know that ‘Captain America: Civil War’ is chock-full of not only superheroes but fantastic and well-choreographed fight scenes as well. Would you believe, though, that there were even more superhero-on-superhero action sequences that were left on the cutting room floor? Well, believe it, True Believer – and read on to learn more!
During an interview with Fandango to help promote the film’s release, ‘Civil War’ writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed information about a scene they wrote into an early draft of their script that, sadly, never made it into the finished cut of the film that audiences got to see. Markus put it as plainly as he could:
“There was a good fight between Captain American and Black Widow that we lost, mainly due to time.”
After having seen the movie, of course, we know that Cap and Nat had a few tense moments between them; even though they spent most of the film being on “opposite sides,” Black Widow ultimately helps Captain America escape the large team-vs-team battle at the airport because it was “the right thing to do.” Even though the fight itself may not have happened, the narrative of the film allows for plenty of the issues and tension between the two to play out regardless.
McFeely also chimed in on the would-be fight and the pair’s relationship – including who he feels “won” the fight:
“They clearly have a deep relationship even though they’re clearly on opposite sides, and you never know how many times you need to hit that over the course of the movie. I think it works without this fight, but we certainly didn’t know if it would. I guess Cap [won] – let’s just say he got away in the moment, how about that?”
