Ah, the time-honored tradition of the post-credits scene… well, maybe not so time-honored, since it’s only been heavily in use since the superhero/action-movie boom of the last 10-15 years or so, but it’s still pretty cool, right?  The X-Men universe of films is no stranger to the after-movie extra, with scenes ranging from insightful to the future of the franchise (the most recent team-focused film, ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ gave us a direct link to the about-to-be-released ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’) to simply goofy and fun (Deadpool in a bathrobe telling you to go home… need we say more?).  Just a few weeks before the release of the newest X-film, we have not only received official word that there is a post-credits scene in the movie – we’re also given a little bit of info about what it contains.

Collider had a chance to chat with ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ writer Simon Kinberg during the film’s press tour, and he was able to shed the slimmest glimmer of light on the subject.  Here’s what he had to say about the film’s post-credit sequence:

“It’s a nod toward potentially a lot of different movies. I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there’s also another character that’s introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie.”

Delightfully vague, but also curiously specific; not only will we get something to do with the upcoming Wolverine movie – reported to be Hugh Jackman’s last go-round with the character – which is currently filming and gunning for an R-rating, but we’ll get a name-drop of another character who will feature somewhere in the X-Universe in the future.  The ‘Gambit’ solo film was recently shelved indefinitely by Fox, so that’s an odd name for Kinberg to drop.  It’s also possible that we’ll get some very brief touching on either ‘Legion’ or ‘Hellfire,’ one of the two upcoming FOX TV shows that are also set in the X-Men shared universe.  Perhaps the filmmakers will just go for broke and tease Onslaught as the next big “to-fight villain” for the X-team; only time will tell.

‘X-Men’ Apocalypse opens in US theaters on May 27, 2016.
