With the last film in the second ‘X-Men’ trilogy to be released later this month, all eyes are now headed toward the franchise’s spin-offs. With the successes of ‘Deadpool’ and the ‘Wolverine’ films, it’s no wonder that Fox would want to continue to expand the ‘X-Men’ cinematic universe and with the introduction of the younger versions of the X-Men that fans were first introduced, it seems that the natural progression would continue on with other young versions of mutants. Since Charles Xavier just happened to have opened the School for Gifted, who else would you expect to make an appearance in the ‘New Mutants’ film than Professor X himself?
During a press junket for ‘X-Men: Apocalypse, ‘X-Men’ franchise producer Simon Kinberg revealed that the mutant who currently leads the X-Men would indeed be in this film:
“Right now, as the movie exists, Professor X would be a part of a New Mutants movie.”
While he didn’t clarify whether it would be the James McAvoy or Patrick Stewart version of Professor X, with Kinberg declaring that the next X-men movie will be set in the 90s, it’s a good bet that it will be McAvoy that will be leading the New Mutants. Also circulating is the rumor that Alexandra Shipp’s Ororo Munro/Storm will appear in the film perhaps taking on her role from the comics as an X-Men teacher at the school.
Kinberg also stated the targeted date for ‘New Mutants’ to start production would be sometime in early 2017 which would suggest a 2018 film release which Fox happens to have a reserved date in July with an unknown title attached.
What we know about the development of ‘New Mutants’ is that it will have more of a Young Adult vibe and that Josh Boone, who is tapped to direct, has already turned in a second draft of the script. Boone has also possibly teased who will make up the New Mutants team on his Instagram page posting images of Cannonball, Mirage, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Magik, and Warlock.
After 15 years of the same main ‘X-Men’ characters in the mix, it will be nice to get a new set of mutants to carry on the franchise. Hopefully, Boone’s second draft will please all those involved and casting for the new team will soon begin.
