wolverine 3

As audiences prepare themselves for the latest installment of the X-Men movie franchise to hit theaters later this month, news bits pop in about individual X-characters as well.  We learned a while ago that Gambit‘s solo movie is now indefinitely “on the shelf,” but on the happier side of reporting, today brings us some fun information about ‘Wolverine 3‘ – primarily, that it has already begun filming and that the powers-that-be behind the film are gunning for an R rating!

The fine folks over at Collider managed to squeeze the new information out of Simon Kinberg, the executive producer for the new ‘X-Men: Apocalypse,’ at that film’s London premiere.  Rumors have been swirling about both the rating of ‘Wolverine 3’ – going R-rated makes sense now from both a plotting and financial standpoint ever since ‘Deadpool’ proved that it can be done – and the co-starring of Patrick Stewart in the film.  Kinberg didn’t exactly confirm the second rumor, but he did go on record about the first, saying this:

“I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

When asked for details about the tone and scope of the film, Kinberg was intentionally vague, while still dropping a few hints that fans are in for something different this time around:

“It’s a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies.”

While these tidbits aren’t stone-cold confirmation, the info certainly seems to point towards some type of an “Old Man Logan“-esque story being filmed; the fact that the movie will take place in the future may very well indicate that we’ll be seeing the “end of the line” for Logan/Wolverine, which would likely be a very fitting way to send Hugh Jackman out on his 16-year-plus portrayal of the character.

‘Wolverine 3’ is set to open in American theaters on March 3, 2017.
