Black Widow 1

Though ‘Captain America: Civil War’ is primarily a Cap film, it is also an ensemble piece with various Marvel superheroes, new and old,  playing roles of varying importance.  One character that plays a fairly large role is Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, which isn’t surprising considering the large part she played in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.  Perhaps more than her fellow heroes, Black Widow finds herself the most torn between the two clashing ideologies, and her loyalty to the two leading Avengers.

Having played important roles in five different Marvel movies now, is it time for Black Widow to fly solo in her own film?  About a month ago, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios teased that a ‘Black Widow’ movie would be “great.”

Now, Feige is a bit more adamant in his discussion of a ‘Black Widow’ movie saying:

“We’ve announced the next nine movies, ten counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters [including Hawkeye, War Machine and Falcon] I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow.

“We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise.”

So clearly if a ‘Black Widow’ movie happens, it will be after 2019, which may seem like a long time from now, but these movies tend to churn out faster than we think.  Time flies!

Johansson has excelled in dramas and ensemble pictures, but her sci-fi lead ‘Lucy’ didn’t do well.  She’s also starring in the live-action adaptation of the anime ‘Ghost In The Shell’ which has been embroiled in controversy.  But as a beloved established part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a ‘Black Widow’ solo movie may have a better shot.

Are you excited to see Black Widow headlining her own movie?
