Director Josh Boone’s ‘New Mutants’ has taken a step closer to reality. In February, we learned that 20th Century Fox had yanked its beleaguered ‘Gambit’ from its scheduled release but had scheduled two unnamed Marvel movies for October 7, 2017, and January 12, 2018. ‘Deadpool 2’ is the most likely candidate for at least one of those spots. Could ‘New Mutants’ be the other? It is, as far as we know, the only other Marvel movie Fox has in the works.
Boone posted an image of a completed script on his Instagram in August then, in October, sent another tweet that the script was finished. Now Boone has taken back to Instagram with a new image, indicating that a second pass at the script is complete:
Could that free him up to press forward with ‘New Mutants’ (which may wind up being called ‘X-Men: New Mutants’)?
Possibly, as last month rumors emerged that casting was beginning with Maisie Williams (‘Game of Thrones’) reportedly being cast as Rahne Sinclaire/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (‘The Witch’) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik and the announcement that Alexandra Shipp‘s Storm, who debuts in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ this summer, would play a major role. At that time, it was also reported that Mirage, Cannonball and a new version of Sunspot would be part of the film.
Adan Canto played an adult version of Sunspot in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, but the part is said to be recast for ‘New Mutants’ as this will be a younger teen take on the character.
Also, a strong possibility for inclusion is Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who was featured in the mega-hit ‘Deadpool’ wearing what looks an awful lot like a New Mutants uniform. Also worth noting, she was accompanied in ‘Deadpool’ by X-Man Colossus, who is the older brother of Magik. So if she is indeed in the film, can viewers expect at least a cameo by him?
Are you excited that ‘New Mutants’ is getting closer to becoming a cinematic reality?
