The last we had heard it sounded like the cinematic adaptation for ‘The Last Of Us‘ was moving forward quite well though this latest update isn’t quite as favorable. Not only are zombies still hot (which would be the perfect climate to bring a big budget film out) but this smash hit was truly made with a strong enough story that jumping to theaters seemed like a no brainer. Sure, the monsters in ‘The Last Of Us’ aren’t strictly zombies but that is really the closest description for the fungal virus that is infecting humanity.

So what went wrong with production?

In a recent interview, director Neil Druckmann shared some very worrisome news on where development stands right now:

“I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do. There hasn’t been any work done on it in over a year and a half.”

Sadly, things aren’t looking good for ‘The Last Of Us’ at this time. However, Hollywood likes to capitalize on successes and with ‘Warcraft‘ and ‘Assassin’s Creed‘ due this year, progress on this might change. If either or both of those end up being smash hits there could be a push for ‘The Last Of Us’ to move forward sooner than later.

Hopefully not as a rush job.

While I don’t think either of these films are fair comparisons to ‘The Last Of Us’ aside from being based off of video games, I don’t think that would stop some execs from believing their successes or failures wouldn’t be linked.
