Star Wars The Force Awakens C3PO red arm Anthony Daniels

A few things have changed since last saw Luke Skywalker and the whole gang in ’Star Wars: Return of the Jedi’ around three decades ago. The most obvious is that the original cast of beloved characters that appear in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ have aged a bit, but they’re all still as awesome as ever. But some of the mechanical co-stars didn’t age so well. When we found C-3PO, one of his arms had been replaced with a red one. Fans won’t get to find out why until Marvel Comics releases the ‘Star Wars: C-3PO’ one-shot next month, but it turns out that there is already one person who wasn’t a fan of the change.

During the 21st annual Jameson Empire Awards in London earlier this week, Screen Rant caught up with the legendary actor Anthony Daniels as he took a break from filming Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ to support ‘The Force Awakens’, which was up for nine awards. After praising his directors and reiterating his love for ‘Star Wars’ as a whole, Daniels revealed that he wasn’t really a big fan of his droid’s new limb. In fact, that was the one thing that he fought with J.J. Abrams over when he came aboard the highly anticipated sequel:

“The one thing that J.J. and I argued about was the fact that I didn’t like the red arm. C-3PO doesn’t like the red arm! Being the director he said ‘You’re gonna have a red arm.’ But have you noticed, because he listened to me, that the last frame of C-3PO waving at the Millennium Falcon was with a gold arm! And J.J. did that – love it.”

It’s pretty cool to hear that Abrams was open to make the changes to make his cast happy, especially when they have been playing the part for decades, but I can’t help but wonder why Daniels wasn’t in favor of the red arm. From what we’ve heard so far about the reason behind it, C-3PO made a sacrifice of some kind. We won’t know for sure what happened until that comic hits the shelves, but it’s possible that the Lucasfilm Story Group told Daniels what was going down and he still wasn’t exactly all about it. Luckily, we’ll be able to form our own opinions on the unexplained red arm on March 30, 2016 (unless the release date happened to be changed again).
