There is a slew of reasons that we could go on about how and why ‘Terminator: Genisys‘ failed at the box office but the important thing to note for fans of the franchise is that Arnold Schwarzenegger might be back for one last installment.

While the film only managed to make $89.7 million in the States on a $155 million budget it did end up closing at $440.6 million if you include global sales which may suggest that there’s life in the old horse yet. Initial reports had Paramount first delay the film as the frachise’s future was being “readjusted” and later the previously scheduled sequels were completely removed from the release calendar.

Paramount hasn’t been too open with the public as to where the franchise might be going, if anywhere, before the rights revert and they can no longer make a movie based on the property. However, in a recent interview Schwarzenegger was asked about the chances that another film would be made and his answer was:

“I’m looking forward to it, absolutely.”

Clearly not a confirmation that there will be another film but it also shows that ‘Terminator: Genisys’ wasn’t the final nail in the franchise’s coffin. If it had been fully cancelled I’m sure he would have been singing a different song there. Even though the studio has plenty of blockbusters with ‘Transformers’ and ‘Star Trek,’ there is only a limited timeframe to continue any attempts at bringing ‘Terminator’ to the big screen and that might get them to try and release another one sooner than later.

Even though the film was panned by critics and fans alike, there is such a long-running mythology from the comics that could be used and not spoiling the big twist of a sequel in the previews could go a long way in winning over an audience. If anything, going the ‘Deadpool‘ route of delivering a gritty R-Rated film might be something that could appeal to fans and moviegoers in a world where machines are seeking to cause humanity to go extinct.

Do you think that the studio will try to milk another movie or two in the franchise? Could a ‘Terminator 6’ end up being good or have they ruined any chance of another good movie at this point? Share your thoughts below!
