Wonder-Woman-Logo

With ‘Wonder Woman’ due next year, it’s never too soon to get the public buzzing and Warner Brothers has offered a tease in the form of the new movie WW logo which should be coming to a theater lobby near you soon.

The logo is very reminiscent of the versions in the comics, just more heavy metallic-looking with striation details.  It is also subtly rendered in different tones of bronze, with some portions looking brassier than others.  The logo has a 3D appearance and is very… hard.  This seems to be in keeping with the unfolding DC Cinematic Universe, which is aiming for a harder, more serious edge than the family-friendly Marvel Universe.

What’s interesting is that the logo does NOT match the one worn by Gal Gadot in ‘Batman V Superman’.  Does this mean that Wonder Woman will don a second costume?  (Or even more?)  During this age of “more costumes mean more action figures,” it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Wonder Woman were to sport at least one new costume in her solo movie, or more likely two, since the film depicts her during at least two different time periods.

We’ll have to wait until WB releases a new photo of Gadot from ‘Wonder Woman.’

When Wonder Woman first debuted, she wore a costume inspired by the American flag on her journey to the U.S. which had just entered World War II, so that the U.S. military would recognize her as an ally.  Over the years, the ornate golden eagle on her chest became simplified becoming just a sleek stripe with just a few stripes, versus the numerous “feathers” on the original version.

Then in the 80s, DC was informed that they could not copyright the Wonder Woman eagle chest emblem for merchandising.  Thus was born the double W logo she sported pretty much constantly since.  Of course, like those of Batman and Superman, Wonder Woman’s logo has evolved with different artists’ approaches.  More commonly nowadays– as in the case of the movie logo– artists combine the modern WW logo but add the eagle silhouette head to the middle point.

It wouldn’t be too surprising if in the movie, Gal Gadot wore two different costumes– perhaps an eagle logo during the WWI scenes and the WW in modern sequences.

What do you think of the new movie logo?  Is it faithful enough to the comic?  Does it say anything to you about what to expect from the film?

Gal Gadot debuts in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ which is set for release on March 25, 2016.
