The CW’s upcoming time travel superhero excursion ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ is set to collide with the Old West, as it has been announced that DC Comics’ most famous western hero Jonah Hex is slated to appear.

Hex is a former Confederate soldier whose face is badly disfigured and branded with a scar that is called the “mark of the demon.”  Though not as squeaky clean as most heroes, Hex does adhere to his own moral code and has starred in numerous comic series, some for all ages and others for more mature readers.  Though his typical stories are set in the Old West, he has crossed over with more modern heroes thanks to time travel tales.  In two separate comics, Hex killed both Superman and Batman, so will he be an ally to the ‘Legends’ team or a foe?

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim enthusiastically delivered the announcement of Hex’s inclusion, saying:

“Ever since we decided that Legends would involve time-travel, we were eager to do a story set in the Old West.  But if you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply must include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well known, beloved DC character to television.”

Jonah Hex will appear in episode 11 of the new show, but there is a possibility that he could recur.

In the classic comics, Hex is known as the deadliest man alive, due to his quick gun drawing skills.  The hero was reinvented in the 80s, propelled forward through time to an apocalyptic future.  This phase has largely been ignored since then.

Jonah Hex was actually adapted to a big screen film starring Josh Brolin as the gritty gun-slinger, but the film took major liberties from the comics, including granting the title antihero supernatural powers, including the ability to raise the dead and to force them to tell the truth.

It’s probably safe to assume the as-yet-uncast ‘Legends’ version of Hex will not have these powers.

Are you excited to see Jonah Hex on ‘Legends of Tomorrow’?

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ stars Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/The Atom, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heatwave, Ciara Renée as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Falk Hentschel as Carter Hall/Hawkman and Victor Garber and Franz Drameh as Professor Martin Stein and Jay Jackson respectively, who combine to become Firestorm the Nuclear Man, plus Casper Crump as villain Vandal Savage.  The new series debuts on January 21st.
