Fans of the giant rampaging monster genre were dealt a heavy blow recently when the sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’ was halted indefinitely, but all hope isn’t lost just yet. While moves are trying to be made to get the studio drift compatible with the filmmaker, ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and another ‘Godzilla’ movie are on the way. However, what about follow-ups to other films of this sort? Well, if ‘Cloverfield’ came to your mind first, then we have some news for you.

While promoting ‘The Martian’ at the Toronto International Film Festival, writer Drew Goddard spoke to MTV about a potential sequel to the game-changing found footage monster film. And though he is receptive to the possibility down the line, Goddard makes it clear that the right idea needs to come along first rather than doing another one for the sake of doing another one:

“I don’t know that that’s going to happen. We’d all like it to. I think [director] Matt [Reeves] and [producer] J.J. [Abrams] and I all feel like we don’t want to do it just to do it. You know? It’s more do we have an idea that we’re passionate about. Because not everything needs to be a franchise. The first one never felt like we were making a movie, it felt like we were in our garage getting away with one. And I think we want to get back to that, and if we don’t then we’re just not going to. I think it’s important that we want it to feel special, whatever it is. We don’t just want to do the same old thing.”

I’m glad that Goddard has the mindset that not everything needs to be a franchise. It’s too true, especially in this day and age where practically everything in theaters anymore is a sequel or a remake. Although, movie studios and their executives don’t always agree with this sentiment. Let’s just hope that they don’t go over the filmmakers’ heads and ruin a good thing. I mean, look how epically it failed for Disney when they produced ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame II’ or ‘Pocahontas II: Journey to the New World’. At the end of the day, I’m sure that Goddard and company will revisit monster-ravaged New York City again when the time is right.

What do you think about Drew Goddard’s comments about a ‘Cloverfield’ sequel? Do you want to see a follow-up to the acclaimed 2008 film sooner rather than later? Sound off in the comments below.
