No one saw this coming this time one year ago. The summer slate was jam packed with big budget potential blockbusters, including a slew of reboots to long dormant franchises like ‘Terminator: Genisys‘, ‘Jurassic World‘ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’. Who knew how that would turn out? Well, ‘Terminator: Genysis’ completely tanked, but ‘Jurassic World’ broke records and became one of the highest grossing movies ever! And ‘Mad Max’? It’s up for Best Picture at the 2016 Academy Awards!
This isn’t completely out of the blue. ‘Fury Road’ has already racked up a slew of accolades including ‘Best Film of the Year’ by the National Board of Review. It’s extremely rare for a sci-fi action film to score with such critical judges. Usually the major awards competitions are exclusive to emotional dramas, but George Miller’s return to the franchise actually scored a nomination for the biggest award in the film industry this year, and Miller is also acknowledged in the Best Director category.
The field this year isn’t limited to such serious fare though. Another crowd pleaser, ‘The Martian‘ is also up for the big award, although in a glaring omission, director Ridley Scott was snubbed for Best Director. Matt Damon, who just won the Golden Globe for Best Actor (in a comedy) did earn a nod in the Best Actor field.
‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ also scored nominations for Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
‘The Martian’ also landed nods for Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
The underrated sci-fi drama ‘Ex Machina‘ was snubbed in the major categories, but received some acknowledgement in regard to Best Visual Effects and Best Original Screenplay.
Box office behemoth ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ only scored in the more technical categories but the legendary John Williams did score love for Best Original Score.
