It always seemed like an awkward fit, but for a couple of years now, TNT has been developing a TV series based on DC Comics’ ‘Titans’ formerly the ‘Teen Titans’. The show would have centered on Dick Grayson/Nightwing (formerly Robin) and would have also included some version of Barbara Gordon (a.k.a. Batgirl and Oracle), Starfire, Raven and Hawk & Dove. But the project is officially dead, as network president Kevin Reilly announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour:
“We just decided it wasn’t quite where we wanted to go.”
Superheroes are all the rage right now, with ‘The Flash’ and ‘Arrow’ ranking as the top shows on The CW and ‘Supergirl’ performing well at CBS, not to mention the slew of movies attracting audiences to theaters. But on TNT, ‘Titans’ would have been removed from the established shows. ‘Arrow’ has already used some of the comic book Titans’ main villains, Deathstroke and Brother Blood, along with current Big Bad Damian Darhk, not to mention long-running team member Roy Harper/Speedy/Arsenal. Meanwhile, over on ‘The Flash’, ‘Titans’ founder Wally West/Kid Flash is currently making a mark on the present season. Also, Cyborg is due to hit the silver screen in this year’s ‘Batman V Superman’.
It’s not clear what elements of Titans lore TNT would have even been able to use.
Akiva Goldsman (‘Fringe’) and Marc Haimes (‘Men In Black II’) were attached to the project.
The ‘Teen Titans’ live on in the hit Cartoon Network series ‘Teen Titans Go!’ and there are rumors that the planned ‘Cyborg’ live action movie may actually be retooled as a ‘Titans’ project.
In the comics, the Teen Titans were initially made up of the sidekicks of the heroes in the Justice League, but over the years, they have also taken in self-contained adolescent heroes, like Raven, Starfire and Cyborg as well as Hawk & Dove.
Will these heroes now make their debuts on the big screen? Or do you feel that they would have been better off on TV?
