We’ve already seen that Angel is going to become Archangel in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ and a new promotional banner is showing off his wings in all of their glory. This latest image comes from Brazil’s Comic-Con and the look itself is absolutely stunning. While we’ve seen concept art of Angel becoming Archangel this is further proof that it is happening and a look at the design of what everyone’s favorite mutant playboy will end up looking like in the next installment in the ‘X-Men’ franchise. At least, what he’ll be looking like from behind.

Sure this still doesn’t show them off in their full glory or how exactly he gets them but if it is anything like the comics we can expect something pretty brutal. There are some mild comic spoilers ahead which may let you know what is coming up in the movie itself so if you don’t want to know how he goes from feathery wings to something a little more metallic, you may want to turn back now.
In comic lore Apocalypse chooses Angel to be one of his Horsemen, who could be thought of as generals. This all stems from when Angel’s wings are first mutilated and later amputated without his permission. Shortly after when he is thought to be killed in a plane crash we see that Apocalypse actually saves him and offers him a chance to live and have his flight restored in exchange for being his Horseman of Death. With metal wings that can cut through anything and a stronger overall physique was tempered with mental conditioning, Angel followed Apocalypse’s belief of “survival of the fittest.” When he came to full power, he was one of the X-Men’s greatest threats.
How exactly will that play out on the big screen remains to be seen. We don’t know in the rebooted timeline if he even knows who the X-Men are or who is a member and will be able to exploit their weaknesses for his new master. I suspect that we’ll see a similar incident happen to his wings which will trigger this change, though I’m sure it won’t quite follow the comics as most of the movies haven’t.
