The upcoming ‘Gambit‘ movie has a director. Rupert Wyatt, the director of ‘The Gambler’ and also ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ has been chosent to direct the upcoming movie based on the Marvel comic book character. He will be joining Channing Tatum, who is playing the role of the eponymous character, and Josh Zetumer (screenwriter for the 2014 version of ‘Robocop‘) who is writing the screenplay.

For those who aren’t familiar with the character of Gambit, in the X-Men comics he’s a mutant from New Orleans named Remy LeBeau who has the ability to charge objects with enough kinetic energy to make them explode. He is frequently seen using playing cards as his primary weapons of choice, probably due to his shady past of having been raised by thieves and gamblers. He was created in 1990 by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee (no relation to the legendary Stan Lee).

This isn’t Gambit’s first appearance on the big screen. He was a minor character played by Taylor Kitsch in the ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ movie as well. It’s not clear what direction the Gambit movie is going to be taking yet since it’s still so early in the movie’s production, though it has been said that this will be an origin story. That makes sense, since most mainstream audiences probably aren’t as aware of who he is and might need some extra background to understand the character. We’ll make sure to update you on any more information that comes out as it’s released.

The ‘Gambit’ movie is currently slated for release on October 7th, 2016.
