I’m sure many of you out there can link their terror of clowns directly to Tim Curry’s performance as Pennywise in the 1990 release of Stephen King’s ‘IT’ and producer Seth Grahame-Smith claims that his take on the story will be even more vicious. With ‘True Detectives’ Cary Fukunaga in the director’s chair, I am actually looking forward to a film which, aside from Curry’s iconic performance, actually feels quite flat these days. With two movies being made to properly tell the story of this 1986 novel, we will hopefully be in for something special.

The plan is for the first film to focus on the kids who join forces to take out Pennywise while the second see them grown up and returning home only to find that their greatest fear has come back to haunt them once again.

For me to actually be interested in a reboot unlike say the slew of horror reboots coming up like Poltergeist‘,’I Am Legend‘, and ‘Pumpkinhead‘ should really say something.

According to Grahame-Smith:

“I think that if anything, [the new film] will bring back some of the viciousness of the book that they couldn’t do with the miniseries because it was for broadcast. I think it’s going to be very scary, but I also feel like you’ve got Cary who is going to direct these kids—and he’s incredible at casting, incredible at shooting. He’s incredible with tone and atmosphere. One of the things I wanted to do is be a part of one of the really good King adaptations. As we know, there is an echelon of King adaptations that are classics. There are some that are okay. There are some that we’d rather forget.”

At least they have a solid idea on how to tackle the split movie. Where is it in production though?

“We’re going to get a draft, what is supposed to be the shooting [script], any day now from Cary and his writing partner. We’re doing a deal for them to write the second movie. Our hope is to prep sometime in the next few months and shoot in the summer. That one is as much on the runway as we can possibly be. I know New Line is ready to go.”

While I will usually just scoff when I hear of a reboot happening, I have a special place in my heart for Pennywise. On the one hand, I don’t feel as if they will truly be able to do the clown justice.  On the other, I really feel that the entire rest of the story could truly use a face lift.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming ‘IT’ reboot? Do you think the ideas here are solid or are you ready to pass on it before shooting begins?
