True Believers everywhere are rejoicing as Martin Freeman (‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,’ ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’) has officially joined Marvel’s upcoming ‘Captain America: Civil War‘!

It looks as if someone over at Marvel Studios is a fan of ‘Sherlock’ and not only had to have Benedict Cumberbatch (‘Star Trek Into Darkness‘,’The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’) as ‘Doctor Strange‘ but Freeman as well. We can only hope that they find a way to pair the two together in a future movie. At this time, we still have no idea as to what kind of role Freeman might have or what the chances are they could even be in a position to be on screen together.

There is already a lot going on in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ that will make it hard to hazard a guess as to exactly who Freeman will be playing. We’re going to see Tony Stark and Steve Rogers go head to head over governmental control over The Avengers or superheroes. Could this point to Freeman being a superhero or a politician? In the comics, the entire event is kicked off from super heroes taking on a super villain that pretty much blows up causing the deaths of over 600 civilians. Could Freeman be playing a super villain that causes a catastrophe? Finally we also know that the film will have Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo as the main villain. Could Freeman be working with Zemo?

Better yet, they could use the movie to actually introduce us to Doctor Strange and have him play Wong, Strange’s sidekick. I mean let’s be honest who wouldn’t want to see more of Cumberbatch and Freeman sharing screen time?

I have a feeling that if we’ll see him in a major role it won’t be too long until it is revealed as the film is already shooting. Of course, with it already in the works one almost has to wonder how big of a part Freeman could have unless his casting has just been a secret until now. My personal guess though is that we’ll be seeing him in the role of one of the politicians that Tony Stark ends up working with to create a world where superheroes need to be registered with the government.

It should be pointed out that The Latino Review is claiming that he will play “some sort of interrogator and that he will return to appear in Black Panther.” Their theory, and it is a solid one if that is the role, is that he’ll play Everett Ross which is a Government agent that works with Wakanda. As ‘Captain America: Civil War’ should be giving us an introduction to Black Panther, it could make sense that he be involved here. Though at this time that is just rumor and theory, though one I could easily see play out on screen.

Producer Kevin Feige weighs in on the casting with, “From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in ‘The Office,’ Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn’t be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
