Seems James Gunn is slowly whittling down the list of potential extraterrestrial heroes and villains who will appear in the highly anticipated sequel to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ most recent with his statements regarding Captain Marvel and Venom, both of whom he claimed would not be making an appearance, despite their origins in outer space.
“Getting this [question] a lot this morning. As I said months ago, no, [Captain Marvel] sorry.”
Fans had speculated on the inclusion of Captain Marvel when Gunn had stated previously that the film would introduce his favorite Marvel character, and that it was a lady. Fans immediately jumped on the idea of introducing Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2,’ but alas now we know this is incorrect. As for Venom, Gunn was a bit more cryptic, claiming that in regards to rumors that Venom or the symbiote will appear:
“There are no rumors. Just guesses, which are fun. Only 6 of us know who’s in GotG2.”
Now fans are looking to comments made by Gunn leading up to the release of the original film, where he stated his favorite characters were Annihilus and Starhawk. With Annihilus tied up with 20th Century Fox with their ‘Fantastic Four’ rights package, it seems that the last and best guess for Gunn’s favorite character that will be introduced in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ will be Starhawk.
Other characters recently shot down as potential additions to the cast are as follows: Gladiator of the Shi’ar Empire (which is doubtful as the Shi’ar are under the X-Men umbrella), Ronan the Accuser (died in Part 1), Bug, Rom: Spaceknight, and Nova, a fan favorite who would fit perfectly as they had already introduced the Nova Corp in Part 1. Gunn shot down all of these characters when asked if they would be included, though fans have been deliberately misled by directors before, so there are still hopes that we might see some of the aforementioned characters after all, even if just in the background or an after-credits scene.
