‘Expendables’ star Terry Crews has announced that he wants to be considered to play Luke Cage in Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series. The actor has mostly starred in movies in recent years, but he does have TV experience having starred in the sitcom series ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ and currently on ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’
The former football player enthusiastically voiced his desire to play the super strong hero by saying:
“…He was our Superman. There were no African-American superheroes out there. He was the first. He was the man. He was the one. The only example we could look at. I remember then seeing Falcon and a couple of others. Even in the D.C. Universe there was Cyborg. But Luke Cage was the original one where you said ‘This is me. This is my guy. This is the character.’ So he’s the equivalent to Superman for me.”
Previously, Isaiah Mustafa (better known as the spokesman for Old Spice) had lobbied for the role. Mustafa even went as far as to film himself in the role in hopes of swaying Marvel to supporting him. Mustafa was up for a Marvel role, that of Drax the Destroyer in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ but the part went to David Bautista.
Idris Elba also disclosed that he was attached to the role at one time, but Elba has a British accent. I’m sure he could pull off an American accent, if needed though.
Both Elba and Mustafa look the part… but so does Crews and Crews has a larger resumé including several roles in the action genre, like the previously mentioned ‘Expendables’ franchise. In addition, Crews has already provided the voice for one Marvel hero, Blade the Vampire Slayer on the animated ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ series.
I think fans will be pleased with either option, though. Crews is more famous, but Mustafa could also do a good job in the role.
What do you think? Terry Crews, Idris Elba or Isaiah Mustafa? Or someone else? Who would you like to see in the role?
