‘The Maze Runner,’ based on James Dashner’s well-received book series, is gearing up for a media campaign to break through the end of summer malaise that usually greets late summer/ early fall blockbusters. While ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ might be championing the idea that later releases can be wildly successful, ‘The Maze Runner’ does not quite have the built in audience that a Marvel feature does. Based on the young and talented cast however, ‘The Maze Runner’ has a good chance of doing well regardless.

Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf, The Internship) plays teenage hero Thomas, who wakes up to find himself trapped in the titular maze. Thomas not only has the immediate problem of the maze to complete, but he is also surrounded by the rest of the ‘Gladers,’ Gally (Will Poulter), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Alby Aml Ameen), all of whom distrust the newcomer.

With a plot involving being trapped and powerless in a dangerous maze surrounded by peers who can swing from friend to foe in a heartbeat, the film has every chance in the world of finding a young audience who can easily relate to the situation. Which is what a lot of studios are banking on nowadays, as the ‘Twlight’ and ‘Hunger Games’ franchises have clearly demonstrated the buying power of the younger audiences. And with the sci-fi elements of the treacherously shifting maze and the mysterious Grievers culling those left behind every night adding a darker edge to the story, many older moviegoers might be willing to give the film a shot.

In the new featurette ‘Meet the Gladers’ (below), the ensemble cast of ‘The Maze Runner’ introduces their characters and gives some insight into the bonding involved in shooting the film. From campouts to inside jokes, the boys (and one girl, Kaya Scodelario playing ‘Teresa’) meshed into the sort of work family usually found on films shot almost entirely on location. If the final film manages to retain the fun the cast and crew had while shooting it, it will definitely be worth the watch.

Look for ‘The Maze Runner’ to open on September 19, 2014.
