Recently Kevin Feige sat down and talked about quite a bit of what Marvel has planned for the future, but when it came to ‘Doctor Strange’ he was a little vague. What we do know so far is that the studio has tapped Scott Derrickson (‘Sinister’, ’The Exorcism of Emily Rose’) whose writing and directory history is rooted firmly in darkness. In fact, his current film in theaters, ‘Deliver Us from Evil,’ is about exorcisms and possessions. That would seem to hint at a potential direction of the film. At least you would think it does.

So what exactly did Feige have to say about the Sorcerer Supreme when asked if it would be a horror movie?

“I would say you can certainly look at the past work of the filmmakers we hire as a bit of an indication for the tone of the movie, but not necessary everything. The Russos, who are well known for their sitcoms, there is nothing sitcom about ‘The Winter Soldier’! No, I wouldn’t say just because he has only done horror movies means that ‘Doctor Strange’ is going to be a horror movie. It means he is a talented filmmaker who we think could add something unique and very fresh to the particular franchise. But there could be scary moments. There are scary moments in all our movies! There are some scary people that Strange has to deal with, I will say.”

I’m not fully sure how I feel about that answer. On the one hand I would say that they went with Derrickson with his history in horror to truly bring out potential villains such as Dormammu, Mephisto, Lilith, and more. On the other, I wasn’t expecting them to go with such a highly science fiction themed film such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ a few years ago so a horror movie could be feasible. While I’d love to see Marvel jump in those waters, I think that at its heart they are trying to keep the franchises family friendly and the only true Marvel horror project we could potentially see down the line would be a Netflix series with other properties.

I’m pretty sure we’re going to get another mostly family friendly action film with just areas of the underworld and dark dimensions channeled through Derrickson’s past experiences in film. We’ll see though.

What do you think? Will ‘Doctor Strange’ be Marvel’s first horror film or will it be an action film with a darker theme to it? Share your thoughts below true believers!
