It has already been made clear that Bryan Singer wants Gambit and Nightcrawler in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘. We also found out awhile back that Channing Tatum (‘Jupiter Ascending‘, ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘) would love to play Gambit on screen! Well it seems that these two desires might actually have converged from wishful thinking into reality.

It seems like Tatum has already been in talks with X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner about donning the role of the ragin’ Cajum and he has even been working on his accent. This could play well into the thought of who would play Gambit in a spin-off solo movie as producers have had three X-characters in mind for their own film and Gambit was one of them! Could ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ be the first of many roles for Tatum in the X-Men universe? Picking up a known actor for a fan favorite character could be a good idea for Fox with Wolverine living on borrowed time before he needs to either be recast or die for a few movies before being brought back to life and recast in the process.

When asked at the MTV Movie Awards if we would see him as Gambit the full response was:

“I met with Lauren Shuler Donner. And I would love it. Gambit is really the only X-Man I’ve ever loved. I mean I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, but I guess from being down south – my dad’s from Louisiana, I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida – I don’t know. I just related to him. He’s just kind of suave… He’s the most un X-Men X-Man that’s ever been in X-Men. Other than maybe Wolverine, who’s like the anti-hero. He’s a thief. He’s not even a hero. He’s kind of walking the line of grey…He loves women and drinking and smoking and stuff so he’s just a cool guy who happens to have a moral center….I hope it [comes together]. You never know it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would die to play it. I’m already working on the accent. It’s crappy at the moment.”

Honestly it really feels like he not only is a fan of the character, but has a take on how he should be portrayed. That sounds to me like a much better solution over picking an actor or actress who are unfamiliar with the characters at all.
