Fresh off of the recent release of the new trailer for ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ during the Super Bowl, the film’s director has casually revealed some interesting news concerning his upcoming Spidey sequel and where B.J. Novak fits into the whole thing. Back in March, Marc Webb confirmed that the star of ‘The Office’ and ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ had joined his cast, however, it was never revealed who the he was playing exactly. Novak dropped some hints in an interview with The Huffington Post by saying that his character is from the comic books that isn’t pivotal in the movie (yet?), but more than an extra. But now we’ve learned that after the doors of Dunder Mifflin were closed, the actor made his way over to Oscorp as one of their more notable employees.

According to the tweet from Webb on his personal Twitter as seen above, Novak will play Alistair Smythe, a member of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery known as The Ultimate Spider Slayer. Smythe is the son of scientist Spencer Smythe, the inventor of robots called Spider-Slayers that were commissioned to kill the wall-crawling superhero. But when Spencer perished due to prolonged exposure to radioactive samples involved in the creation of his machines, Alistair picked up where his father left off and set his sights on Spidey with the help of an arsenal of new machinery.

Alistair Smythe as The Ultimate Spider Slayer

This isn’t the first time that the Smythe family has been mentioned in conjunction with ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. About three months ago, an article from The Daily Bugle mentioned Spencer Smythe and his “significant advancements in robotics” which helped Oscorp climb four points in the stock market despite the assault from “disgruntled Oscorp employee Dr. Curt Connors”. The article made no mention of his son working by his side at Norman Osborn’s company, but we’ll see just how deep they delve into the Smythe’s story once the movie hits theaters this summer. Although, with the trio of Electro, Rhino, and the Green Goblin all lined up to take on Spider-Man in this chapter of the untold story, I don’t find it likely that we’ll be getting much of Alistair’s origin if any at all in this film. Regardless, it’s cool that he’s being introduced and being played by B.J. Novak. Plus, if the character is being introduced here, maybe we’ll get to know him in the spinoff ‘The Sinister Six’.

What do you think about B.J. Novak playing Alistair Smythe in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’? Do you think that he’s a good choice for the part? Could you see him popping up in ‘The Sinister Six’? Share your thoughts and theories in the comment section.
