Showtime had just given us a real teaser for ‘Penny Dreadful’ and now to go with their first behind-the-scenes video they’ve happily delivered us a second one to enjoy the inner workings of the creation of the show! In this video we see the writer, series creator, and executive producer John Logan (‘Hugo‘,’Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’) walking the viewers through the various fictional works that helped to inspire Showtime’s horror themed replacement for ‘Dexter‘. Obviously they aren’t billing it as such a replacement but with a show that had such a morbid topic doing so well and coming to an end it only makes sense.

Let’s check it out below!

Synopsis:

Penny Dreadful centers around some of literature’s famed monsters — including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and figures from the Dracula – weaving together classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation

I think that’s the best overall walk through of the literary roots of ‘Penny Dreadful’ to date and I love how they are talking about using so much of the source material. With the budget and talent that Showtime has been throwing at its projects, I’m extremely excited to see this coming out. With the acting and creative talent being put into it, I’m a little more excited to hear about this than the similar concept that Fox is trying to do with ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen‘.

Has the additional insight on the show’s creation made you more or less excited to see these fantastic monsters brought to life and together once again? Are you eager for this show’s release or wish they had gone with original characters and not bringing back the classics? Share your thoughts below!

‘Penny Dreadful’ debuts on Showtime in 2014 and stars: Josh Hartnett, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, Reeve Carney and Helen McCrory.
