When Marvel announced their new Marvel NOW initiative last year, one of the most anticipated titles was ‘Young Avengers’ from indie darlings Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie. The two set out to bring one of the most popular young teams on the House of Ideas’ roster into an all-new era. Based on the reaction from the fans all over the internet and at cons, they certainly succeeded and earned quite a following for their incarnation of the beloved team.
At this year’s New York Comic Con, we were lucky enough to get a few minutes to talk to Gillen about the awesome team featuring Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye, Noh-Varr, Miss America, and Loki and what’s in store for them in the next few months. Not only that, but we talked about his work on ‘Iron Man’, former ‘Doctor Who’ companion Karen GIllan ruining his life, and his punk rock approach to comics and his fans. I also found it particularly interesting when he talked about using Miss America as the Captain America character in his book over others who share the iconography of the Star-Spangled Avenger.
