Scarlett Johansson is busy promoting her current film ‘Don Jon’ co-starring and directed by Joseph Gordon Levitt, but in a recent interview with noted film maker Darren Aronofsky, she spilled a few details about reprising her role as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’
Regarding the film’s chronology, she explained:
“Yes. This film is in real time. It’s been two years since [the characters] appeared, and now both are agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fighting in the streets. We are not superheroes flying side by side. They help each other because we are fighting in a similar way. It’s a working relationship.”
Leaked set photos reveal that the pair share something of a romantic undertone to Black Widow’s relationship to Cap. This would mirror the events in the animated ‘Ultimate Avengers’ movies. But Johansson’s statements seem to dispel that idea.
“By a series of unfortunate encounters, they will be in a situation in which their friendship becomes more intimate. They share many similarities because they live on the defensive without relying on anyone. Also, the two have been working for the government throughout their professional careers. With their friendship they begin to question what they want and what is their true identity.”
Factoring in that Hayley Atwell will be reprising her role as Cap’s true love, Peggy Carter from the first film, albeit at an advanced age and that Emily Van Camp will be joining the franchise as Agent 13 a.k.a. Sharon Carter, Peggy’s daughter and Cap’s modern love interest in the comics, it sounds like Cap’s dance card is probably filled just fine without a Romanoff romance. (Latino Review quickly pointed out that, at least as of ‘The Avengers’ Cap was still a virgin, having only kissed Peggy, right before boarding The Red Skull’s aircraft.)
What do you think? Who should Captain America wind up with romantically? Fellow super agent Black Widow? Other fellow agent Sharon Carter? Or should he remain faithful to his aged first love Peggy? Name your choice below in the comments!
‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ will hit theaters on April 4th, 2014.
