A few weeks ago, J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot released an eerie trailer called ‘Stranger’ on their YouTube channel. Declaring that “soon he will know”, the video contains some incredibly strange imagery. While it didn’t offer up any details beyond that, many assumed that this teaser was released to promote the upcoming novel from Abrams and Doug Dorst titled ‘S.’. Now, thanks to a new trailer, we can confirm that information.

When that first video was released, it definitely garnered much attention. With Abrams involved, it literally could’ve been anything. But now Entertainment Weekly confirms that the teaser is indeed for the upcoming multi-media reading experience. Thanks to them, you can check out the latest trailer for the book, which features a few more puzzling scenes for us to mull over until the novel’s release, and a description of the layered story below:

‘S.’ is basically about the relationship between a grad student named Eric and a college senior named Jennifer. They trade notes in the margins of a (fictional) 1949 novel by a mysterious author named V.M. Straka. ‘S.’ contains the novel within the novel; copious handwritten notes between Jennifer and Eric (“a conversation that plunges them into the unknown,” according to the book jacket); and dozens of pieces of ephemera between the pages like newspaper clippings and a napkin with a map drawn on it. (‘S.’ will come shrink-wrapped so none of this extra material falls out.)

This isn’t your regular dime store novel, folks. ‘S.’ certainly doesn’t seem like any other book out there right now and with Abrams involved, it’s sure to be something worth talking about. So even though it’s not out yet, let’s talk. What do you think about the upcoming novel? Are you interested in this complex story from the man who brought you ‘Lost’, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, and ‘Fringe’? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

‘S.’ will be on the shelves of your local bookstore on October 29, 2013.
