Riding high on the buzz from the first full-length trailer for ‘Divergent’ shown during the otherwise embarrassing VMAs on MTV, Summit, with the help of Fandango, has released this look behind the scenes with the actors and author Veronica Roth.
Check it out!
Veronica Roth was only 22 when ‘Divergent’ was first published, but it’s easy to see why it burst onto the young adult scene, debuting at #6 on the ‘New York Times’ Best Seller’s list for Children’s Chapter Books (in 2011, before “young adult” was a household phrase) and winning Favorite Book on the Goodreads Choice Awards in 2011. The serious coming-of-age themes of choosing status quo or the unknown, the comfort of family over following one’s dreams alone, easily sets this series apart from the whimsy of ‘Harry Potter’ or the passion of the ‘Twilight’ series.
Theo James explains the backstory best by explaining that a war-ravaged state found the only way to keep the peace and find democracy was to divide society into five factions: those representing compassion, honesty, intelligence, selflessness, and bravery. When you reach a certain age, you can choose to stay in the faction where you’ve been brought up — the one your parents chose for themselves — or you can leave your family behind to join a new faction better suited for your personality. During testing, however, the main character is discovered to be Divergent — potentially able to thrive in more than one faction — a fact the tester urges Beatrice to keep secret, as the ruling government goes to extreme measures to keep each faction separate and controlled.
Fans of the book series will be happy to hear it straight from Ashley Judd, who plays Beatrice’s mother, that the film doesn’t stray much from the book.
The action-packed stuntwork aims to prove this is no young-adult fluff, and the talent brought together with this ensemble is sure to result in a movie that’s not to be missed.
‘Divergent’ hits theaters March 21, 2014, so there’s still time to compare the book series to the films. The second installment of the book, ‘Insurgent,’ is in stores now, and the final book, ‘Allegiant,’ hits shelves in October of this year.
