Back when Bryan Singer announced that he would be returning to the X-Men franchise with ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’, he mentioned that he planned on creating a more unified universe while amending some unfavorable decisions that were made in the thirteen years since he directed the first film in the series. For instance, despite the event of ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, Patrick Stewart will return as Charles Xavier in the upcoming film. But another team member that seemingly met his end in that film will not be making a comeback like Sir Patrick.
In an interview with Vulture, James Marsden reflected on his time as Cyclops and the possibility of the character popping up in ‘Days of Future Past’. After all, nearly every other mutant to appear onscreen in Fox’s films will be appearing, so it’s perfectly logical to see if we’d see Scott Summers again. Unfortunately, the frequent leader of the X-Men probably won’t make it into this film according to the actor:
“No, no X-Men, unfortunately. But who knows? If this next film really works, Bryan [Singer] has said he wants to fix a few things, so hopefully that’s one of them. It was great, to have a movie like that, the first two or three X-Men, and the studios in Hollywood work really hard to find a formula that’s successful, and you want to keep that intact, so …”
Then, after revealing that he hasn’t seen ‘The Wolverine’ yet, Marsden shared his hope that other characters would get the spinoff treatment similar to Hugh Jackman’s Logan:
“I hope that lays the ground for more. We’ll see. I always liked Cyclops, but they have a lot of characters that they have to parcel out, spend time with each one, make sure everyone feels like they’ve been given their due, introduce them appropriately, but you could do a spinoff of every one of those characters and give them so much depth to the story line.”
While it is very unfortunate that the team mainstay will be absent from the next installment of the series, Scott’s brother (or father? They’ve never really clarified this in the movies…) Alex Summers AKA Havok will be returning after appearing in ‘X-Men: First Class’. And like Marsden said, Singer could potentially bring Cyclops back somewhere down the line, so let’s not lose all hope of seeing the character on the big screen ever again.
What do you think about Cyclops missing out on ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’? Do you think Bryan Singer should have brought him back alongside Wolverine, Storm, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, and the rest? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
