The biggest development this issue is the further establishment of DeSaad, one of Darkseid’s chief lieutenants, named after the sado-masocistic Marquis de Sade. That brutal aspect is explored in depth here as DeSaad tortures himself a slave to serve his nefarious ends.
On the most super heroic side of things, Power Girl and The Huntress take on gigantic Dogs of War. (Hunger Dogs?!)
The art, overall, is solid. Unfortunately, it skews too much into the porn-y side. I was happy to see Power Girl return to her pre-New 52 leotard with the infamous “boob window,” but the poses in this issue went too far. Maybe they’re trying to utilize sex to sell this book, but I don’t think that’s necessary. It was so bad that it detracted from the story. I kept thinking, “I do NOT need to see this much of Power Girl’s butt or boobs!” It was just too much.
Story-wise, this issue raised some interesting questions. Are there two Apokolipses? Is the same Apokolips that devastated Earth 2 the same one that invaded Earth 1 and led to the formation of the Justice League? Hmmmm.
There were some really cute character moments in this issue. Helena proved more gentile than previously shown. Like I said, the art is overall lovely, but it’s just so… porn-y! I don’t know if that was an editorial edict or what. I just wish we didn’t have to resort to cheesecake to sell comics.
