When the new show from David Goyer called ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ was greenlit by Starz as part of their partnership with BBC Worldwide, it almost sounded like the show would be depicting one of the greatest minds to have ever walked the Earth as a vigilante superhero. Considering his work on such films ‘Blade’, ‘Man of Steel’, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Goyer is certainly no stranger to those sorts of characters, but it appears that he is bringing in the professionals for the next season of the show who know a little bit more about superheroes than he does.
On his personal website, David S. Goyer revealed that Matt Fraction and Jonathan Hickman would be joining the writing team of ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’, which is currently airing it’s eight-episode first season on Starz. Both writers are among the cream of the crop at Marvel Comics right now and they’ve been hired to work on two episodes of the reimagining of Leonardo da Vinci’s early years. Goyer had this to say about the writers in the announcement:
“One of the best parts of this job is that you occasionally get to call up people you admire out of the blue and ask them if they want to play in your sandbox. Sometimes, they say ‘yes’, so I managed to convince Starz and the powers that be to hire Matt and Jonathan on to write two episodes of Season 2 with our trusty staff. In case you don’t know who Hickman and Fraction are they are comic gods in the indie and Marvel world.”
Goyer couldn’t be more right in his statement. Matt Fraction and Jonathan Hickman are two of the biggest names in the comic book industry right now. Currently, Hickman is overseeing the major Avengers books, ‘Avengers’ and ‘New Avengers’, which are the company’s flagship titles. Before that, he had a legendary run with Marvel’s First Family as he wrote ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘FF’. As for Fraction, he took over the Fantastic books from Hickman when he moved over to the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes side of the office. He also writes ‘Hawkeye’, the Eisner Award nominated title that emerged this year as a surprise hit thanks to the amazing writing and the wonderful artwork from David Aja. Both men are excellent and extremely qualified additions to Goyer’s writing team. I might have to start watching the show to get caught up before their episodes air.
