Well, it’s official. Showtime confirmed today that this upcoming season of ‘Dexter’ will be its last. The announcement was made with the release of the latest sneak peek clip for the series which can be seen below.

Ever since Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) found out about her foster brother’s side “hobby”, many fans knew the end was near.  In an interview with EW earlier in the month, Michael C. Hall, who plays the title role of the serial killer of serial killers, felt the time has come to bring Dexter’s story to completion:

“I’ve been an advocate for having a dialog with the writers and getting a sense of how to best bring this story home — not wrap everything up with a tidy bow, but find some sort of conclusion. There has to be an end game. Once Deb found out, it felt like we were moving toward a place where the world as Dexter knew it would end.”

In a statement released, Showtime chairman and CEO Matt Blank said of the series:

“When it debuted in 2006, ‘Dexter’ redefined the genre by taking the anti-hero to new heights and pushing the boundaries of the television landscape. ‘Dexter’ paved the way for the next generation of award-winning hit Showtime series and its cultural impact will be felt for years to come.”

David Nevins, Showtime President of Entertainment, added:

“’Dexter’ is a landmark franchise for our network and we cannot wait to unveil the conclusion of this series as we know it to the millions of passionate fans who have supported the show season after season. We’d like to thank Michael, Jennifer and Dexter’s indomitable cast, executive producers, writers and crew for eight incredible seasons”

In the clip below, it’s been 6 month’s since the Season 7 finale and Dexter confronts Deb about her not returning his calls and on her absence at a certain person’s memorial (spoilers for those who haven’t seen Season 7 yet!). Her response is just a little taste as to what the final season will bring.
