The cast of Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman’s ‘Ninja Turtles’ is slowly starting to shape up. Back in February, Megan Fox was brought on to play the plucky reporter April O’Neil. Then, in March, the four turtles were found in the forms of Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, and Noel Fisher. And most recently, ‘Arrested Development’ star Will Arnett signed on for an unspecified role in the series reboot. Though the four leads are decided, there are still some key roles that need to be filled. However, you can cross Master Splinter off that list because it appears that the mutated rat and turtle father figure has been cast.
According to Deadline, ‘Seinfeld’ alum Danny Woodburn will join ‘Ninja Turtles’ as Splinter, the caregiver of the our heroes in a half shell that teaches them the way of the ninja. The former Mickey Abbott has a large body of work ranging from projects on stage, on television, and on the silver screen. In addition to hanging with Jerry and the gang, he’s known for roles in ‘Death to Smoochy’, ‘Watchmen’, ‘Jingle All The Way’, and, most recently, ‘Mirror Mirror’. Woodburn is an interesting choice to fill the role because he’s not exactly known for having any sort of martial arts prowess, but he’s proven time and again to be a crowd-pleaser, so now we’ll get to see a whole new side to his acting ability in this role.
Prior to the casting of Woodburn, there was a question of whether or not the actors playing the characters via motion capture would be providing the voices as well. The casting of this veteran actor as Splinter seems to suggest that that will indeed be the case. Knowing that, it’s interesting that the filmmakers would bring in these relatively unknown actors to fill these iconic roles. But then again, the supporting cast so far is filled with big names, so there’s your box office draws right there.
Now that Splinter has been added to the roster of roles filled, there’s still a question as to who will take the parts of the antagonists. So far, the only characters to be cast have been our heroes, but who will be the bad guys? Sure, Arnett’s role hasn’t been revealed yet and for all we know, he could be playing the turtles’ greatest enemy, Shredder, but I don’t see that being too likely.
What do you think of Danny Woodburn playing Master Splinter? Are you okay with this surprising casting choice? And who do you think will round out the cast as the villains of the film? Let us know what you’re thinking in the comments below.
