In just a of couple months, TV audiences will soon know the “story” of what drove Norman Bates to insanity when A&E premieres their new scripted series ‘Bates Motel.’ To give viewers an idea of the tone of the show, the A&E has given ScienceFiction.com these 3 teaser promos that will begin airing tonight, Sunday, January 13.

The promos have an ‘American Horror Story’ vibe with short snippets of footage followed by the title page. While the movie ‘Psycho’ took place in the 1960’s, showrunner Carlton Cuse states that ‘Bates Motel’ is more of a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film ‘Psycho,’ and promises to give viewers an intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates’ psyche unravels through his teenage years. This is very much apparent in the teaser called ‘Dance Party’ with body painted bikini clad girls partying in an obvious retro room at the motel.

The ‘Bates Motel’ will follow Norma and Norman Bates after the tragic death of the family’s patriarch. Norma Bates buys a motel on the outskirts of the idyllic coastal town of White Pine Bay, hoping for a fresh start. As Norma and Norman get ensconced in their new home, they discover this town isn’t quite what it seems, and the locals aren’t so quick to let them in on their secrets. But the Bates’ are done being pushed around and will do whatever it takes to survive – and will do whatever it takes to protect their own secrets.

‘Bates Motel’ seems like it will be an interesting series and looks like it will enter the realm of the bizarre. I enjoyed ‘Lost’ and am looking forward to seeing Cuse’s take on what made Norman Bates unravel. I just can’t help, however, likening the promo materials released so far to ‘AHS’ as the look is very similar to the ones FX released before their series began.
