Over the years, there have been many ‘Star Wars’ comics that have been published to continue the intergalactic epic created by George Lucas, however, to my knowledge, there has not been one yet to be set during the original trilogy. However, this January Dark Horse Comics will be releasing a new ongoing series that does just that.

Written by Brian Wood featuring interior art by Carlos d’Anda and covers by Alex Ross, ‘Star Wars’ #1 will be set in the three years between ‘A New Hope’ and ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and will feature all our favorite classic characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader. According to the writer, this series “will pretend like its 1977 and no other films were ever made or books ever written”. In a recent interview with The Nerdist, Wood elaborates by saying:

“I’ve had to clarify that statement so many times! By that quote what I meant to say is that IN THE CHARACTER’S MINDS, nothing has happened since the events of the first film. Luke and Leia don’t know they’re siblings, Vader doesn’t know Luke exists, and so on. Which is a challenge.”

Not only does Chris Hardwick’s band of merry men (and women) have an interview with the new ‘Star Wars’ writer where he talks about the challenges of taking on such a sacred thing like THE trilogy, but they also have a few exclusive pages from the upcoming inaugural issue. Check them out below where you can see Darth Vader and the Emperor having a friendly chat:

Coming at time of new beginnings in the ‘Star Wars’ universe where a new trilogy is coming together over at Disney, it’ll be interesting to see how Dark Horse (and not the Mouse House’s own comic company, Marvel) handles these new stories from such treasured territory as the original trilogy.

‘Star Wars’ #1 will be released on January 9th, 2013.
