This past weekend at the San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Brothers treated fans to a new half-hour documentary on the history of one of the most famous cars in history… the Batmobile. The special, titled aptly enough ‘The Batmobile’ was first shown on July 12th along with a display of all six film and television versions of the classic vehicle. This was the first time in history that all six Batmobiles have been seen together.
‘The Batmobile’ will follow the evolution of the car from it’s original appearance in comic books in the late ‘30s up through the latest incarnation as the massive Tumbler in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (including my personal favorite, the 1960s Batmobile from the Adam West television series). Here’s a clip of the official press release for ‘The Batmobile”:
From its inception in the late 1930s, the Batmobile has been a symbol of power, hope and justice, as well as the pinnacle of technology as the most awe-inspiring weapon in Batman’s arsenal. In its contemporary and most robust form as the Tumbler, the Batmobile is a combination of unbridled creativity, advanced technology and the pursuit of “justice on wheels.”
The special uses archival footage, images and illustrations of the Batmobile to document its birth and evolution to the present day. Interviews with filmmakers, key designers, builders, stunt drivers, actors and fans of the Batmobile lead the viewer on an exploration of the true impact of this cultural icon. Personal stories will interweave with historical context to tell the definitive story of the world’s most recognized automobile. Interviews include actors Christian Bale and Adam West, and directors Christopher Nolan, Joel Schumacher and Tim Burton.
THE BATMOBILE is from New Wave Entertainment and Warner Bros. The special was directed by Roko Belic, produced by Tara Tremaine and edited by Michael Fallavollita.
Sounds pretty darn cool, eh? So, if this was shown at the SDCC, why am I telling you about it now that the Comic-Con is over? That’s because Warner Brothers is giving fans a couple of chances to catch ‘The Batmobile’ tonight on the CW!
The special will air twice, once at 8pm EST and again right after at 8:30pm. So set your DVRs or prepare to watch to get a glimpse into the history of this awesome car before seeing it in action when ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ hits theaters this coming Friday, July 20th.
