Ever since it was reported that the Wachowski siblings were creating another original film, sci-fi fans lit up with excitement. The duo was responsible for one of the most original and innovative films in the genre: ‘The Matrix.’ So it was of no surprise that when the announcement of their next film ‘Jupiter Ascending’ came out, everyone wanted to know what this movie would be about. For months the plot was shrouded in secrecy, but thanks to Vulture, we now have an idea.
‘Jupiter Ascending’ is being described as an action sci-fi film that is the first of a trilogy. The film will star Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis and will take place in a universe where “human beings are just the Cro-Magnons, or even the Australopithecines, of what beings can ultimately go on to become in the galaxy.” Similar to the concept seen in ‘The Matrix,’ these higher forms of life are watching humans from other worlds such as “planets and moons.”
Here’s more of what their source had to say about the plot of the film:
“(‘Jupiter Ascending’) centers on an unlikely (and as with ‘The Matrix,’ ultimately reluctant) heroine: A recent Russian immigrant — played by actual Ukrainian immigrant Mila Kunis — who is busily scrubbing toilets for a living. Unbeknownst to her, she actually possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to her otherwise immortal rule.”
Of course the Queen is none too happy so what does she do? She dispatches a “bounty hunter” to dispose of the maid but instead he falls in love with her. The bounty hunter (played by Channing Tatum) is now forced to go on the run as he is now on a mission to protect the maid rather than kill her much to the fury of the Queen.
The source also goes on and described the evolved beings that also exist in the film:
“These evolved beings fall into various different groups, all of which share some human DNA but who have become evolved after being bred with animal DNA to heighten their best characteristics — e.g., soldiers getting their fearlessness, strength, and a pack mentality from wolves; workers getting their industriousness and reputation for diligence from bees.”
Okay, the film sounds a lot like ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ in outer space but with the Wachowski’s, you never know what you’ll really get. It’s also fair to point out that this is not an official synopsis as all this is coming from a “source.” Much like the “source” who informed E! Online that Taylor Kitsch was on the shortlist to play Finnick Odair in ‘Catching Fire’ and we now know how that turned out! And while we’re at it, word has it that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be offered a part in this film but has not yet been officially asked.
What I do like about the “unofficial” description is that ‘Jupiter Ascending’ sounds like it will be a film of many layers. Beyond the obvious fairy tale similarity, the movie includes concepts of human/animal hybrids seen in comics and allegories for racism, theology and caste. It has the potential to put the Wachowskis back on the map as they not only wrote the script but will also be directing and producing the film.
